Sarah Kim and Justin An, drama students from Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, Korea, came to San Jose Christian Colleges to hold a week-long drama workshop for the elementary and high school students of SJCC.
Students had to audition and only a limited number of elementary and high school students were able to participate in this intensive program.
The elementary students focused on animal characterizations and expressing different emotions. The students designed and created their own animal masks and used them to act out fables. The students rehearsed their lines and stage blocking, and performed for the entire workshop (including high school students).
The high school students did more intensive work in expressing emotions, different energy levels, and even learned about dramatic structure. Then they created their own plays, which they wrote, acted in, directed and created costumes and props for. The plays were performed in the final Drama Showcase for the entire workshop.
After the Drama Showcase, everyone enjoyed a special Jollibee lunch with Goldilocks Cake for dessert (courtesy of Drama Workshop leaders Sarah and Justin). Then Sarah and Justin handed out certificates of participation to all the deserving students!
This was the first workshop of its kind to be held at SJCC, but the interest (and talent pool!) seems to be high, so we hope to do this more regularly!
Sarah is now studying at the University of Chicago, where she is assistant directing a play. Justin is in his final year of high school and is acting in the school play, Romeo and Juliet. Both expressed interest in coming back to SJCC to continue the work they started with the students at SJCC.
